The Vatican, Europe's Smallest State
The Vatican located in the heart of Rome is home to the Pope and the centre of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican Museums, founded in the 16th century by Pope Julius II, contain an immense collection that includes renowned Roman & Greek statuaries and masterpieces of Renaissance art among which the extraordinary frescoes by Raphael and the Sistine Chapel with its famous ceiling decorated by the divine Michelangelo.
Exploring the outskirts
On a day trip to the outskirts of Rome, we can drive along the Appian Way, explore the underground tunnels of the Catacombs of San Callisto, visit the wonderful rooms and gardens of the villas of Tivoli, Adriana and d’Este, or the ruins, impressive frescoes and mosaics of Ostia Antica.
